Virunga Trails is what happens when the people who grew up on a mountain start guiding on it. The company was founded in Musanze in 2015 by three childhood friends from villages on the lower slopes of Bisoke and Muhabura, all of whom worked as porters and trackers before earning their guiding licences.
That local grounding shapes everything: treks leave earlier than the crowds, routes flex around each morning's tracker reports, and the golden monkey and Dian Fossey add-ons are guided by people who have walked these forests since they were children. Groups are capped small, and the company still hires its porters from the founders' home villages at above-market rates.
If you want the volcanoes explained by people who consider them home rather than a workplace, this is the company.
