4-Day Family Wildlife Adventure

4-Day Family Wildlife Adventure

A safari built around children rather than merely tolerating them: Akagera game drives with the park's kids' ranger booklet to fill in (binoculars provided, sticker on completion — taken very seriously), a boat safari among the hippos, and a village day of drumming, cattle and banana-juice pressing that the whole family joins rather than watches.

Distances are short — Akagera is 2.5 hours from Kigali — days end early, and the lodge has a pool for the hours when small legs are done with the vehicle. There is no minimum age, and the guides are chosen for their patience as much as their eyesight.

  • Kids' ranger programme with booklet, binoculars and badge
  • Boat safari among hippo pods on Lake Ihema
  • Hands-on village day: drumming, cattle and banana juice
  • Short drives, early finishes and a pool at the lodge

Our kids still wear the badges

Ranger booklets were a masterstroke — our 7-year-old spotted the first lion because she was actually looking. Short drives, pool every afternoon, a guide (Innocent) with saintly patience. The village football match went to penalties.

Genuinely built for families

So many 'family' safaris just mean a bigger car. This one thought about meals, nap windows and attention spans. The boat among the hippos was the week's winner for all three kids. Wish the lodge food had more variety, hence half a star.
